I never realize their was some history behind that act.
The celebration of May Day (May 1) began in ancient times. The Druids of ancient Britain celebrated it as the beginning of the second half of the year. After the Romans invaded Britain, they used the day to celebrate Flora, the goddess of flowers. Many modern May Day customs are derived from these combined celebrations. The custom of leaving May flower baskets at the doors of friends and neighbors is friendly gesture and a fun way to remind everyone that spring has come.

When My kids were little we use to make baskets and take them to the nursing home. Folks really loved it and we sang songs.
So it is the original act of kindness day. Nothing in return – just being kind to our neighbors.
Just wish I had access to flowers… I could have put baskets on all my neighbors doors.
